5-Bullet Friday…on a Sunday

One day, I received a message from my friend Nate, an iOS developer who recently moved down to LA (@nathanwchan). At first I thought it was just to chat and maybe plan to get together, explore LA’s diverse food scene, and just catch up.

But it wasn’t…

Instead it was a simple request for my e-mail address. So trusting him with my personal e-mail address, I gave it to him not knowing what to expect back.

Nothing came of it until the following Friday, where I received an e-mail titled: Nate’s 5-Bullet Friday.

Intrigued, I opened it to find what looked to be a personal newsletter recounting his and his wife’s experiences about moving down to LA. But what caught my eye the most was his ‘5-ish bullets’ about his week.

Since starting this newsletter last summer, it has served as a forcing function to keep my eyes open and reflect on what I discovered and learned throughout the week, while helping me keep in touch with all of you. -Nate

I thought this was a GREAT idea. But whether I’ll be able to continue doing this on a weekly basis or not… “We’ll see.”

But I really wanted to get started on my own and try it out at the very least.

So here we go: Shawn’s 5-Bullet Friday…on a Sunday!

What I’m excited about/looking forward to:

Last week, I officially got announced as an official Kaskade Konnect* rep. I was approached about this back in December, but nothing definitive was set. And to be honest, it didn’t matter if I became a rep or not. I was more than happy to keep contributing to the Kaskade Konnect community in the ways I always had (eg. Kaskadian Cycle, local and festival meetups, social engagement).

So when I received a ‘Welcome’ e-mail from them, I was completely surprised! It’s a great opportunity to use my skills to add more value to the community and help inspire others to do the same! And it’ll be amazing to work with others who have the same mindset. I only hope that I can catch up quick and help out wherever I can! #eagerbeaver

*Kaskade Konnect is a community of Kaskade enthusiasts and fans. It’s brought me to a whole new world of music appreciation and some amazing new people from all over the country!

What I’m learning/working on:

With the new role in Kaskade Konnect, there’s a lot of new projects and tasks that I’m working on. I can’t disclose exactly what, unfortunately, but it’s introduced me to new tools and processes that haves helped me with my existing work.

For example, I’ve been using a mix of Trello, G-Suite, and notepads to map, document, and manage my projects. However, Geeg (@ohhmygeeg) introduced me to Asana and I gotta say:

Honestly, this project management tool been such a pleasure to learn. (The interface is so clean and intuitive!) And for a FREE platform, it does a LOT of things that I wish I had when I was using my old system.

10/10 would recommend. And Asana even has training modules to help its users to learn and use best practices on their platform.

What I’m reading/watching/listening to:

Digital Marketing and Business blog articles, infographics, updates, news, etc.

Food news, especially about LA/SoCal. Did you know that someone at Food and Wine decided to taste-test and rank 17 different Oreo flavors? Can I have the job too, please?

Now that I’ve finished Ugly Delicious, Jessica Jones, and Top Chef Season 15, all that’s left are my recurring shows: Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, Arrow, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and of course my never-ending rewatch of Friends. Could I BE more of a fan?

Also, I was able to finally watch Black Panther this week. Damn, what cool movie. Marvel just gets it right, and now I’m super excited for Avengers: Infinity War now.

Various Digital Marketing/Social Media podcasts, this Chill mix by MrSuicideSheep (great for working/background music), and of course Kaskade’s new single “Cold As Stone”.

What I’m eating/drinking/cooking:

Nothing spectacular this week. Although, this entire month I’ve started using my Aeropress again. Which reminds me, I gotta go buy some more beans. Any recommendations?

Quotes I’m thinking about:

Don’t work for recognition, but do work worthy of recognition.

– H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

Personally, I’m not one for recognition, even though EVERYONE needs (and craves) for it. I guess I should re-word that, I don’t crave it as much as others.

So this quote really sticks out to me. Instead of having ‘recognition’ as the goal, set your mindset to just keep doing GOOD work. Recognition can come and go, but you yourself have to be proud of the work you do. If you aren’t proud of the work that you do, then why should others?

Well that’s all for my first-ever 5-Bullet Friday…on a Sunday! Whether it continues to be a weekly thing, or maybe on an ACTUAL Friday, we’ll see.

But I can see the appeal to keeping up with this. It really gave me a chance to look back at the week and reflect on what’s going on and what I’ve learned before going into the next week. #alwayslearning

I hope this has helped you in some way and if so, let me know in the comments below or hit me up on Twitter (@iamshawnlu)!

I’d love to hear your experience with this and what you’ve learned.

Until next time, cheers!
